Russians have revenge on minds against Canada

Twelve months have passed and the World Junior Hockey Championship is exactly where it was one year ago. And the year before that.

With a 4-2 win over the host Swedes yesterday, Russia earned a spot in the final against Canada - for the third straight tournament. Canada won 5-0 in last year's title game and 6-1 in 2005.

"I'm very glad to face Canada again," said Russian forward Ilya Zubov. "Team Canada is very good and it's going to be a very interesting, hard match. I hope that we get revenge.

"Last year our goal was to win and we lost. We're still angry, of course, and Russia's not used to being second. Our goal is always to be first."

Igor Makarov, Alexei Chere-panov, Alexander Vasyunov and Artem Anisimov scored for Russia against the Swedes, while Jonas Junland and Niklas Hjalmarsson replied for Sweden.

Coming into the tournament, most experts thought Canada, the United States and Sweden were gold-medal contenders, while Russia was an afterthought, with only four players back from last year.

"Maybe some people are surprised because not many expected this sort of success from us" said Makarov, who also had two assists. "But we've got a great team and it's gone all right."

An announced crowd of 5,354 showed up in rowdy form at Ejendals Arena and did its best to inspire the home side. In the end, though, the result was indicative of the play.

"We think we are on the same page that Canada and U.S. are on, so it's hard to lose," said Swedish standout forward Oskar Osala.

"Russia is a good team. We knew they were going to be good, but (they were) maybe better than we expected."

Shootout protest: Immediately after losing to Canada in yesterday's shootout, U.S. officials approached the International Ice Hockey Federation to protest a call made by Swedish referee Ulf Ronnmark.

They believed a shot by Patrick Kane in the shootout's fourth round was trapped beneath goaltender Carey Price, but crossed the goal line as he slid into his net.

Ronnmark didn't immediately review the goal, to the Americans' chagrin, but the IIHF later did and confirmed his call.

"Following the game, the supervising group, together with the tournament chairman decided the situation still called for review in order to ease the tensions from Team USA, which is fully understandable," said IIHF spokesperson Szymon Szemberg. "He should have gone upstairs right away to avoid this situation."

Memories for Hirsch: No matter what happened to Canadian goaltender Price in the shootout, it would pale in comparison to Corey Hirsch, the team's goaltending consultant.

Hirsch, you may recall, was immortalized on a Swedish postage stamp in 1994 after Peter Forsberg beat him for a shootout goal that won gold for Sweden at the Winter Olympics.

"Some guys thought it would be a good joke to mail him something with that stamp on it, for when he got back home," Price joked. "When we were in Stockholm, we were actually in a room and it had a big square picture of Hirschie being scored on. He's good about it."

With that infamous moment possibly in the back of his mind, Hirsch watched intently as Price sealed the Canadian win.

"It's way easier to play in one than it was to watch that," Hirsch said. "It's too stressful when you have absolutely no control over it."

As for the stamp: Hirsch wasn't happy 12 years ago, when it reached post offices, but he's learned to cope.

"I saw the picture," he said. "I'm sure they all had a good laugh at it."

Through five games, Price has allowed only five goals for a tournament-best goals-against average of 0.97. His save percentage of .967 also leads the pack.

The Canadiens' No. 1 draft pick (fifth overall) from two years ago plays for the Tri-City Americans in the Western junior league.
